The Indian media and entertainment (M&E) sector reached Rs 1.82 trillion (US $ 25.7 billion) in 2019, a growth of 9% from 2018, the FICCI EY report “The era of consumer A.R.T. Acquisition Retention and Transaction launched today. With its current trajectory, the M&E industry in India is expected to exceed Rs 2.4 trillion (US $ 34 billion) by 2022, at a CAGR of 10%.
However, FICCI and EY have clarified that the findings of this report do not take into account the rapidly evolving impact of Covid-19 on the industry.
While television and print maintained their position as the two largest segments, digital media overtook the filmed entertainment in 2019 to become the third-largest segment of the M&E industry.
Digital subscription revenue has more than doubled compared to 2018, and digital advertising revenue has increased to 24% of total ad spend. The sector continues to grow faster than GDP, driven mainly by the growth of subscription-based business models and the attractiveness of India as a destination for content production and post-production.
Future Scenario
The Indian M&E industry is expected to grow 14% in the 2016-2021 period, surpassing the global average of 4.2% CAGR, with ad revenues expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15, 3% during the same period.
Television is expected to grow at a CAGR of 14.7% over the next five years as advertising and subscription revenues are expected to show strong growth of 14.4% and 14.8% respectively.
The print is expected to continue growth at 7.3%, thanks in large part to the continued growth in readership in local markets and ad confidence in the mid-sized, Tier II and Tier III cities.
The film segment is expected to bounce back and is expected to grow with a CAGR of 7.7% as revenue streams broaden.
Digital ads are expected to grow by 2020 with a CAGR of 32%
Animation and VFX are expected to grow at a CAGR of 20.4% in the 2016-2021 period
